She is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller The Teen Vogue Handbook: An Insider’s Guide To Careers in Fashion (Penguin/Razorbill) and she received her M.F.A. in Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College.

Last week was my last week, for now, at the part-time job I’ve held for nearly two years. This week, I’m moving on to a different part-time job. When I’m done there, sometime this summer—it’s a maternity leave fill-in—I plan to come back to the first gig. If for some reason that doesn’t happen, I’ll probably have to find another one.

The Internships

Less than eighteen months before I was due to graduate from college, I still had next to no idea what I wanted to do for a living. I’d majored in English literature and was pretty sure that I wanted to be a writer, but not the sort of writer who spends all of her time working on something that might not ever be published, or read by more than a few hundred people if it was. I couldn’t see the point of that. If “bestselling novelist” had been the kind of job that you could apply for, I almost certainly would have. But I wasn’t, so I put the idea out of my head.

Manhattan, When I Was Young

Like Anna Wintour—and like Anna’s alter ego, Miranda Priestly, as (lightly) fictionalized by my former colleague Lauren Weisberger—Laurie had two assistants with two slightly different jobs, both of which I held over the course of my time there.
